Conference on Green Existing Buildings

Introduction

While new buildings were improving upon the environmental performance in recent years, existing buildings of the same size and function were consuming substantial amount of energy, water and other resources. Existing buildings encompasses the largest footprint of built environment and hence it is important to initiate retrofits in energy & water consumption, channelize resources to balance the consumption and reduce the cost of operation.
Thus existing buildings offer tremendous opportunities to conserve energy and water as well as provide healthier, more productive work environments and effective operation & maintenance. This also contributes to the enormous benefits to owner in long run with very minimal payback period.
Today we have about 30 billion sq ft of buildings which is expected to grow 100 billion sq ft by 2030 and there lies a huge opportunity to convert them into green.
IGBC Green Existing Buildings - O&M Rating
IGBC EB O&M rating is the first rating system of its kind in India to address sustainability
in existing buildings, viz. Government buildings, corporate offices, admin blocks, educational institutions airports, hotels, hospitals, etc.
The overarching objective of this rating is to facilitate building owners & facility managers in implementation of green strategies, measure their impacts and sustain the performance in the long run. The thrust is on implementation and results achieved.
