Jaipur, 4 October: The 15th edition of the CII-IGBC?s Green Building Congress (GBC 2017) began with a ?Curtain Raiser? Ceremony at Hotel Clarks Amer in Jaipur today. On the occasion, Rajasthan Chief Secretary, Mr. Ashok Jain said that the large national and international participation indicates awareness and interest towards creating a sustainable built environment. He invited investment in green projects in the State. He said that the thrust areas for investment were -- manufacturing, real estate, tourism, IT and services. He said the State has taken a number of initiatives for saving energy. In 191 cities of the State LED lights have been installed in 158 cities. It is no. 1 in the country in terms of changing the lights. It is producing 2000 MWs of solar energy which is 2nd largest in the country and will soon be no. 1 in the country. Rajasthan is a water deficient State he said. The ?Mukhyamantri Jal Swabhalamban? Scheme (MMJS) has proved to be a great success in last 2 years in conserving water.

In his special address, Additional Chief Secretary, Urban Development & Housing Department, Mr. Mukesh Kumar Sharma said that it was appreciable that in last 15 years, IGBC has facilitated 4.68 Billion sq. ft of green building footprint. He hoped that there would be more such green building projects in the State in future.

On the occasion, Chair of World Green Building Council, Ar. Tai Lee Siang highlighted the 3Es ? Engagement, Excitement and Encouragement of green building. Through engagement, GBC would bring together members of different countries who would carry on the spirit of sustainable development. Excitement will be generated upon hearing the success stories of fellow GBCs. He further added that the member councils will feel encouragement in knowing that they are not alone in the run for a green and harmonious planet.

Shedding light on the accomplishments of the World Green Building Council, Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Terri Wills said that green building policies have had around 60% impact. She further added that the council is changing the way buildings are being constructed. Commending the efforts of the council she said that they also play a critical role at the United Nations and are a significant contributor for climate change.

In his welcome address, Chairman, Policy & Advocacy Committee, IGBC, Mr. V Suresh said that the IGBC hopes to increase to 10 Billion sq. ft of area by 2022. He further added that the 3-day event will prove to be a significant platform for world councils to act together for sustainable development

The winner for World Green Building Council (GBC) Chairman?s Award 2017 was CEO Green Building Council, Australia, Ms. RomillyMadew.

The session moderator for the evening was Deputy Director General, CII, Mr. S. Raghupathy.

The vote of thanks was given by Chair, IGBC Jaipur Chapter, Mr. JaimniUberoi.

The Curtain Raiser event was followed by a special session. It was conducted by the Chair, IGBC Delhi Chapter, Mr. Arun Bhatia; Chief Sustainability Officer of United Technologies Corporation, Mr. John Mandyck and Director, Healthy Buildings Program, Centre for Health & the Global Environment, Harvard Chan School.

It is to be noted that tomorrow morning there will be the Inaugural Ceremony which will be addressed by the Chief Guest, Rajasthan Minister for Industry & NRI, Mr. Rajpal Singh Shekhawat and Guest of Honour, Rajasthan Minister for Environment & Forest, Mr. Gajendra Singh Khimsar. Furthermore, the Chair of World Green Building Council, Ar. Tai Lee Siang and Chief Executive Officer, World Green Building Council, Ms. Terri Wills will also address on the occasion.

It is to be recalled that ?GBC 2017? will witness over 2,000 national and international delegates and participation from global thought leaders to share their success stories and best practices. They will participate in over 20 sessions spread over next 3 days.
