'Indian Cement Sector looking beyond Compliance - Setting New Green Benchmarks'

Addressing at the 12th CII Green Cementech 2016, Dr. Shailendra Chouksey, President, Cement Manufacturers Association (CMA) underlined that "going Green" is no longer a buzz word but should become a way of life. He acknowledged stakeholders willingness in adopting smart solutions in their operations and business.
He called on the need for doing more from less and suggested that focused research should be initiated in developing zero water consumption cement. He highlighted the need & importance of improving inefficient construction practices to promote material conservation. He said that, "reuse" is not new to Indian way of life, hence the same attitude should be adopted into business practices, he added.

Mr G Jayaraman, Chairman, Green Cementech 2016, highlighted that Indian construction sector will become the third largest in the world by 2025, with market potential of USD 1 trillion a year. He reiterated that the Indian cement industry is one among the best and efficient in the world.
He underlined that cement sector should look beyond Regulations and frameworks and emphasized that the cement plants should take this initiative with renewed passion & commitment. He also acknowledged that the cement industry is serving the environment by being the absorber of all kinds of waste and stressed on increased technology and knowledge transfer within the sector.

Mr N A Viswanathan, Secretary General, Cement Manufacturers Association (CMA) informed that Indian cement market is expected to achieve a compound annual growth rate of 8.96% during 2014 - 2019 period. He highlighted that Indian cement manufacturers are paying increased attention towards ensuring safety and environment standards at their facilities and mines.
He appreciated Indian cement industry for its long-standing efforts towards reduction of its carbon footprint by adopting the best available technologies and environmental practices. He added that the need of the hour is to focus on cost effective areas like achieving higher utilization of alternative fuels and raw materials, utilization of low grade limestone and lower clinker factor.

Mr K N Rao, Co-Chairman, Green Cementech 2016 & Director-Energy & Environment, ACC Limited informed that GreenCo Rating is the first - of- its- kind in the world which evaluates the Greenness of the company and also suggests the way forward. He also mentioned that GreenPro certifies the Greenness of the product.
The day was also marked by felicitating Smt.Vinita Singhania, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, J K Lakshmi Cement Ltd. with "Distinguished Personality" Award for her outstanding contribution to Indian cement sector and for setting new benchmarks in environmental management.
At the inaugural session of Green Cementech 2016, Indian cement companies were awarded for their excellent efforts in adopting and promoting green practices in their business. The awards were presented under the following two categories:
