Indian Cement Industry leading the 'Green' way

9th edition of CII Green Cementech 2013 gets underway


Delivering his address at the 9th Green Cementech 2013 conference, jointly organized by CII and the Cement Manufacturers Association (CMA), Mr N A Viswanathan, Secretary General, CMA, underlined that the Indian cement industry is one of the best in the world and incorporates state of the art technology in its production process.

He added that the cement industry has been adopting latest technologies to reduce energy consumption which will ultimately help the industry to reduce its production costs of cement, thereby benefiting the nation as a whole.

He said, "The Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) scheme introduced and regulated by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has been instrumental in generating competition within the industry which has made the cement industry set excellent benchmarks in energy savings across the country. The cement industry has also been making efforts to use alternate fuel resources as coal is becoming a reducing natural resource", he added.

Delivering his address on the theme 'Make Indian Cement Plants World Class in Green' Mr G Jayaraman, Chairman, Green Cementech 2013 and Executive President, Birla Corporation Limited highlighted that Indian cement industry is well poised to become one of the global leaders in adopting and promoting Green technologies which would be emulated by other countries.

He underlined that, including options of waste-heat recovery management, alternative fuel sources and innovations in cement production & technology should be explored and advantages of latest innovations should be tapped. He recommended that cement sector needs to further collaborate and work in clusters. This would pave way in facilitating a low carbon economy, he added.

Mr G Jayaraman added that Green Cementech, over the years, has revitalized the cement industry by bringing various Policy makers, industry players, technology facilitators on a single platform which has resulted in many companies going the Green way.

He also highlighted how GreenCo Rating System, the first of its kind in the world has evoked excellent response from the Indian industry and is a milestone achievement in promoting energy efficiency drive in the country. Seven companies have been awarded with GreenCo Rating, including two Cement companies (ACC Limited, Thondebhavi and Vasavadatta Cement, Sedam), he informed.

Mr K N Rao, Co-Chairman, Green Cementech 2013 & Director, ACC Limited, highlighted the activities & initiatives of CII-Godrej GBC in promoting Green business & energy efficiency in the country and the cement industry in particular. The Centre aims to demonstrate that Green makes good business sense, he added.
