CII and WWF-Andhra Pradesh celebrates Birth Centenary of Late Mr Sohrabji Godrej


It was the vision of Late Mr Sohrabji Godrej to protect the environment that led to the funding of the CII-Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre building, first Platinum Rated Green Building. This in turn provided the right impetus to the growth and spread of green building movement in India.

Today, India is one of the global leader in green buildings and with over 1.16 Billion Sq.ft of green building footprint, stands second in the world, next to US. CII-Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre sensitises key stakeholders to embrace Green practices and facilitates market transformation, paving way for India to become one of the global leaders in Green businesses by 2015.

Speaking at the special occasion, Ms Smita Godrej Crishna said that Mr Sohrabji Godrej with his humility, compassion and grace touched the lives of many in the society in addressing issues of environment, wildlife, women empowerment, family planning, heritage conservation, amongst others. Mr Sohrabji Godrej would wear a black patch up his sleeve to express his concern over any incident which grieved him, she added.

Mr Vijay Crishna, Executive Director of Lawkim Motors Group, Godrej & Boyce Mfg Co Ltd shared some of the activities of various Godrej foundations and Trusts, which included The Pirojsha Godrej Foundation, The Soonabai Pirojsha Godrej Foundation, The Godrej Memorial Trust and The Naoroji Godrej Center for Plant Research.

Mr Navin Mittal, IAS, Special Commissioner, GHMC in his address said that it is time we aggressively promote green buildings for a sustainable tomorrow. Green buildings not only conserve resources but are also cost-effective and deliver value for money, he added.

He said GHMC has launched 'Fund Your Park' and 'Adopt your Park', an innovative partnership programme initiated by GHMC aiming at sustained maintenance of Parks.

Mr Hitesh Malhotra, IFS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (WL) & Chief Wildlife Warden, Government of Andhra Pradesh called on the need and importance to undertake R & D in promoting more green tools and technologies. He advocated that installation of solar panels should be made compulsory in Hyderabad and cost-effective solar panels should be developed.

Mr S Raghupathy, Executive Director, CII-Godrej GBC said CII and WWF-Andhra Pradesh will join hands to develop Green agenda for Hyderabad. This agenda would include promoting tree banks, water management measures in parks, documentation of native species of Andhra Pradesh and Phytoremediation projects in and around Hyderabad, he added.

The day was also marked by a panel discussion on Promoting Green & Biodiversity in Hyderabad.
